WHY BIOSTATISTICS: After a few years working in NICU, I was very passionatre about helping the babies I cared foreveryu day. Then I realized that public health and diseasew prevention can make an even bigger impactin people’as lives. The field of biostatistics was particularlh attractive to me because biostatisticians help make sense out of lots of observe trends anddisease patterns, and provide this valuabl information to decision-makers who impact patient care on a much larged scale. After my family moved to Texaw 10years ago, I went back to school and got a master’sw degree in biostatistics.
I started my careerr as a biostatistician at Tenet where I utilize my analytical skills as well as myclinical background. YOUR When I joined Tenet eightyears ago, each Tenett hospital (100+ hospitals at that time) had a stand-alone clinicalk data collection tool with limiterd scope and functionality. This made data aggregation and analysiws at the regional and system level very We also had challenges with version definition standardization and outside In working withour vendors, I led the developmenft of a new infrastructure that uses a Web application calleed eCQS for standardized data collection, a centralizexd data warehouse to host all of Tenet hospitals’ and real-time data feedback for standardized measurement reports, national benchmarking and setting common criterisa for improvement.
As groups like The Joint Commission, the Americaj Heart Association, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaif Services and the Leapfrog Group began to require hospitale to collect and submit data onclinical processes, each of them was usingt different measurement standards and asking for overlappinhg data. In order to avoid redundant data entryfor hospitals, I was active in the nationalp discussions that helped build consensus for standardizeds measurement. I also led a comprehensive project reviewing the specifications from multiplre groups andregulatory agencies, and modifiedx Tenet’s eCQS application to comply with those national initiatives.
Now Tenet’s hospitals only need to ented data once and inone place, and the data can be submittedd to various parties for regulatory national benchmarking and performance improvement assessment.
